My own list of FREE Open Source Alternatives (under construction)

There are a lot of these floating around and I'm even getting updates as people post more suggestions and comments or whinge about various aspects of what other people have written or suggested ... There is also a new site http://www.thebestopensource.com/ which looks promising.

So now I'm keeping my own list. I'm an Ubuntu user so the article is biased towards what is easy to set up on Ubuntu. Ideally, being lazy, I prefer there to be a debian/Ubuntu package available via a respectable repository.

The thing that made me kick of this list was a post I saw recently titled "The 25 Best Alternatives To Your Enterprise Applic..." - only a few of the applications where actually Open Source and some of them still had license fees.

$9000 Willy

A man wakes up in hospital, bandaged from head to foot.

The doctor comes in and says "Ah, I see you've regained consciousness."

"Now you probably won't remember, but you were in a pile-up on the motorway. You're going to be OK, you'll walk again, but something happened. I'm trying to break this gently ... your willy was chopped off in the wreck and we were unable to find it."

The Classic IT Vs Management Joke

A man in a hot air balloon realised he was lost. As he reduced altitude, he spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am... "

Can't say that I've used my blog site much. I keep meaning too but somehow I just never find the time!

Last Day - Saturday 5th July

Homeward bound - our last day in Port Douglas. Didn't really want to leave but all good things have to come to an end.

We did have a bit of time to kill though. We didn't get picked up until 2:30pm and our flight wasn't until 5:30pm.

Day 7 - Friday 4th July

The second last day of our holiday. The hire car has been returned and we're back on the tour bus circuit! Today is the Kuranda Tour on the Skyrail and the historic Kuranda steam train.

We had a whole day to spend in Kuranda - which turned out to be a few hours too long!

Day 6 - Thursday 3rd July

Today was a "quiet" day after the big day we had on Wednesday. It was the last day we had the hire car so we drove up to Mossman Gorge for the morning and made stuff up for the afternoon.

Once again we decided to try and visit Mareeba and once again ... I got us lost! :) I guess we weren't supposed to see Mareeba. Maybe next time ...

Day 5 - Wednesday 2nd July

Forget the sunrise this morning! We were up at 4:30am and on the road by 5:20am. We had a boat to catch in the Daintree that left at 6:30am!

Daintree River Tours was our morning destination!

Day 4 - Tuesday 1st July

The scheme of the holiday was to have one busy day followed by one slightly more relaxing day. After the big snorkelling adventure on Monday, Tuesday was a "relaxing" day!
